Vibration Monitoring during the Construction of the Undercroft Café at Windsor Castle

Looking back over the years:

Back in 2018, Vibration Monitoring Services Ltd was proud to have had the opportunity to carry out comprehensive vibration assessments at Windsor Castle during the construction of the new Undercroft Café on the ground floor, located beneath the historic St George’s Hall. This project required meticulous monitoring to ensure the integrity and preservation of the castle’s ancient structures and invaluable artifacts.

The vibration monitoring was crucial to control and record vibration levels in several sensitive areas, including the wine cellars, St George's Hall Central Fireplace, the Inner Hall, and the Armour Cabinet within the Grand Entrance Hall. These spaces are not only architecturally significant but also house historical items and features that demand delicate handling and constant oversight during any construction activities.

To achieve this, we employed our state-of-the-art Vibra+ vibration sensors, which are specifically designed for sensitive environments. These advanced sensors allowed us to accurately measure and monitor vibrations in real time, ensuring that the levels remained within the strict thresholds necessary to safeguard the structural integrity and historical value of the castle’s features.

Our diligent monitoring and precise data collection enabled the construction team to proceed with confidence, knowing that the historic fabric of Windsor Castle was protected throughout the project.

Today, visitors to Windsor Castle can enjoy a delightful experience in the newly opened Undercroft Café, one of the oldest surviving spaces within the 1000-year-old castle. The café provides a charming setting where guests can indulge in a spot of tea or a light refreshment, all while surrounded by centuries of history. It’s a perfect blend of the castle’s rich heritage and modern hospitality, made possible in part by careful vibration management during the construction process.
